The "Oil Burns" Caused by a Fear of Aging and the Misunderstood "Age Spots" – At Sonic, We Heal More Than Just Skin
Today, an old client returned to the clinic, an elderly lady. This time, she primarily wanted to treat several red moles on her stomach, as well as a few moles on her face.
Seeing her reminded me of the scene from her last visit. It left a deep impression on me.
"That oil splashed really far!"
Last time she came in, it was to remove several spots on her arms. As soon as she sat down, she hurriedly explained to me: "Cindy, these spots are scars from cooking oil splashing on my skin."
I took one look and knew immediately—these were typical "Age Spots" (Seborrheic Keratosis). However, I know that the term "Age Spots" carries a lot of "weight," so I didn't mention those words at all.
I understand my clients' psychology very well. It’s not that people don’t know what they are; it’s that subconsciously, they resist the reality of it. The name "Age Spots" is scientifically imprecise and feels cruel, as if the moment they appear, you are sentenced to being "old." In reality, it is common for people in their 30s and 40s to get them too, but the psychological shadow and the fear of aging caused by the name are often more painful than the spots themselves.
So, when I heard her say that, I immediately comforted her: "Oh, it doesn't matter. Whether they are congenital or appeared later in life, I can remove them here. Don't worry."
** The Truth About "Spots" from a TCM Perspective**
Actually, from the perspective of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), these spots aren't necessarily about "aging"—they are about "Stagnation."
When the body is in a state of sub-optimal health and toxins stagnating inside are not expelled in time, the body tries to protect itself. To prevent harm to the internal organs, the body pushes these toxins to the surface, where they stagnate on the skin.
If left untreated, they will slowly darken in color and gradually become thicker. Over time, they may become itchy and affect local blood circulation.
When the "Mask" is Gently Removed
Last time, after I finished treating the spots on her arms and hands, and was explaining the home care instructions and medication, she suddenly pointed to her upper arm near her shoulder, as well as her thighs and calves, and said: "Oh, I have them here, here, and here too."
Hearing this, I finally couldn't help but smile and ask: "So, where exactly did that cooking oil splash? How did it manage to hit your shoulder, thighs, and calves too?"
In that moment, she couldn't help but burst into laughter herself.
In that laughter, the embarrassment dissolved, and the heavy label of "Age Spots" was lifted.
